What is Turbolux Damp Shield?
Damp Shield is a reinforced elastomeric waterproof coating for exterior surfaces, and it is at its best on roofs. Elastomeric means the dried film stretches and returns, so it moves with the building instead of cracking. Reinforced means it carries fibre for extra strength across gaps. Why do Kerala terraces leak?
Flat and low-slope roofs collect water, and Kerala gives them plenty of it. Concrete naturally develops hairline cracks as it expands and contracts with heat, and each crack is a path for water. During heavy rain, water sits on the slab and is slowly driven through those cracks and capillaries until it shows up as damp patches or drips on the ceiling inside. Parapet walls and the joints around drain pipes are common weak points too.

How does the fibre technology help?
Damp Shield uses 3 mm long-lasting fibre technology. Those fibres reinforce the elastomeric film so it can bridge cracks in the concrete rather than tearing over them. As the slab flexes and hairline cracks open and close, the fibre-reinforced coating stretches across the gap and keeps its seal.

Start with surface preparation. Clean the roof so it is free of dust, grease, oil and loose particles. Open up any small cracks, clean them out and fill them with crack seal.
On a horizontal surface such as a terrace, apply a self-priming coat of Damp Shield diluted with water in a 3:1 ratio, then two perpendicular coats without dilution, aiming for a forced system coverage of about 0.93 sq. metre per litre. Allow 4 to 6 hours drying between coats, and treat the entire roof including the parapet walls for best results.
On a vertical surface, apply a self-priming 3:1 diluted coat followed by a second undiluted coat at around 2.32 sq. metre per litre. Over a previously painted wall with a good exterior emulsion, a single undiluted coat at roughly 2.79 to 3.25 sq. metre per litre is enough. Finish with two coats of Turbolux exterior emulsion in your chosen shade, again allowing 4 to 6 hours between coats. Do not apply during rain or in extreme temperatures, and treat the corners and joints of drain pipes and channels with cement mortar before coating.

Do I still need a top coat over Damp Shield?
Yes. After the Damp Shield coats cure, apply two coats of Turbolux exterior emulsion in your desired shade for colour and added protection.
Can I apply it during the monsoon?
No. Do not apply during rain or extreme temperatures. The surface must be dry and the coating needs time to cure between coats, so plan the job for a dry spell.
Will it really bridge cracks?
The 3 mm fibre technology gives the elastomeric film the strength to bridge hairline and small cracks. Larger cracks should be opened, cleaned and filled with crack seal first.
Does it help with heat as well as water?
On terraces finished in white shades, Damp Shield helps reduce surface temperature, which keeps the space below cooler in addition to keeping it dry.
Where should I not use Damp Shield?
