A simple formula for litres of emulsion, primer and putty for a 2BHK, plus real Kerala-home numbers you can use straight away.
Short answer: A typical 2BHK house in Kerala (about 800 to 1,000 sq ft carpet area) needs roughly 40 to 55 litres of interior emulsion for two coats, 20 to 28 litres of interior primer, and 150 to 200 kg of wall putty if the walls are new. Painting the exterior too adds about 30 to 45 litres of exterior emulsion and 15 to 22 litres of exterior primer.
The exact figure depends on your paintable wall area, the number of coats and the paint’s spreading rate. Below is the simple formula you can use to work it out for your own home in five minutes, plus realistic numbers for common Kerala 2BHK sizes. Prefer not to do the maths yourself? Majestic’s own paint calculator will estimate the litres for you straight from your wall area.
How do you calculate paint quantity for a 2BHK?
Every paint estimate comes down to three numbers: the area you’re painting, how many coats you apply, and how many square feet one litre covers. The formula is:
Litres needed = (Paintable area in sq ft × Number of coats) ÷ Coverage per litre per coat
Here’s how to get each number:
- Paintable area. Measure each room’s perimeter (add up the length of all four walls) and multiply by the wall height. A standard Kerala home has a 10 ft ceiling height. Subtract doors (about 21 sq ft each) and windows (about 15 sq ft each). Add ceiling area if you’re painting ceilings too.
- Quick shortcut. If you don’t want to measure every wall, multiply your carpet area by 3 to 3.5. This gives a reliable estimate of total interior wall plus ceiling area. For an 850 sq ft 2BHK, that’s roughly 2,550 to 3,000 sq ft.
- Coats. Repainting in a similar shade usually needs 2 coats. A new house or a big colour change (dark to light) may need 3.
- Coverage. Most interior emulsions cover about 110 to 140 sq ft per litre per coat on a smooth, primed wall. Always check the pack or the product data sheet, since this varies between products.

How much interior paint does a 2BHK need?
Using the shortcut method and a coverage of 120 sq ft per litre per coat, here’s a realistic estimate for common 2BHK sizes:
| 2BHK carpet area | Approx. paintable area | Emulsion, 2 coats | Emulsion, 3 coats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 700 sq ft | 2,100 to 2,450 sq ft | 35 to 41 L | 53 to 61 L |
| 850 sq ft | 2,550 to 3,000 sq ft | 43 to 50 L | 64 to 75 L |
| 1,000 sq ft | 3,000 to 3,500 sq ft | 50 to 58 L | 75 to 88 L |
Ceilings are usually painted in a dedicated ceiling white, so split your estimate. Ceilings make up roughly a quarter of the total area in most 2BHK homes. For an 850 sq ft flat, that’s about 11 to 13 litres of ceiling white and 32 to 38 litres of wall emulsion for two coats.
How much exterior paint does a 2BHK need?
Exterior area is measured differently. For an independent 2BHK house, measure the perimeter of the building and multiply by its height, then subtract large openings. A single-storey 2BHK house of around 1,000 sq ft built-up area typically has 1,400 to 1,900 sq ft of exterior wall, including parapets and sunshades.
Exterior emulsions usually cover a little less than interior paint because the surface is rougher, often 80 to 110 sq ft per litre per coat. With two coats, that works out to about 30 to 45 litres of exterior emulsion.
In Kerala’s heavy rain and humidity, the exterior finish is where you shouldn’t cut corners. A good exterior emulsion with anti-algal protection lasts far longer on monsoon-facing walls.
How much primer and putty will you need?
Primer and putty are where most homeowners underestimate. They’re only needed in full quantity on new plaster or badly damaged walls. On a sound wall being repainted, you may only need putty for patch repairs and one coat of primer.
| Material (850 sq ft 2BHK) | Typical coverage | New house | Repainting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall putty (2 coats) | 15 to 20 sq ft per kg | 150 to 200 kg | 20 to 40 kg (patch work) |
| Interior primer (1 coat) | 100 to 130 sq ft per litre | 20 to 28 L | 20 to 28 L |
| Exterior primer (1 coat) | 80 to 110 sq ft per litre | 15 to 22 L | 15 to 22 L |
Not sure which goes first? Putty fills and levels the wall, and primer seals it so the topcoat bonds evenly. Our explainer on wall putty vs primer covers the order step by step.

- Wall condition. Rough, porous or unprimed plaster can soak up 20 to 30 percent more paint.
- Colour change. Going from a dark shade to a light one often needs an extra coat.
- Ceiling height. A 10.5 or 11 ft ceiling adds 5 to 10 percent more wall area than the standard 10 ft.
- Application method. Rollers usually waste less than brushes on large walls. Spray application can waste more.
- Built-in wardrobes and tiles. Kitchen and bathroom walls tiled up to the ceiling can be subtracted completely.
How can you avoid buying too much or too little?
- Add 10 percent for wastage and touch-ups. Keep one sealed litre of each shade for future repairs.
- Buy in larger packs. A 20 L pack is usually cheaper per litre than four 4 L packs, and a single batch keeps the shade consistent.
- Buy one room at a time if you’re unsure. Paint the largest room first, note how much it used, and scale up.
- Ask your painter for a written quantity estimate. A good painter will list putty, primer and emulsion separately.
Frequently asked questions
How many litres of paint are needed for a 2BHK flat?
For two coats on interior walls and ceilings, a 2BHK flat of 800 to 1,000 sq ft carpet area typically needs 40 to 55 litres of emulsion. Add 20 to 28 litres of primer and, for new walls, 150 to 200 kg of putty.
How many square feet does 1 litre of paint cover?
Most interior emulsions cover 110 to 140 sq ft per litre per coat on a smooth, primed wall. Exterior emulsions usually cover 80 to 110 sq ft per litre per coat. Check the product label for the exact figure.
How many coats of paint does a 2BHK need?
Two coats of emulsion over one coat of primer is standard for repainting. New plaster or a major colour change may need a third coat of emulsion.
What is the quick formula for paint area from carpet area?
Multiply your carpet area by 3 to 3.5 to estimate total interior wall and ceiling area. For an 850 sq ft flat, that’s about 2,550 to 3,000 sq ft of paintable surface.
Is it better to buy extra paint?
Yes. Buy about 10 percent extra. Shades can vary slightly between batches, so leftover paint from the same batch makes future touch-ups invisible.
