A bright new exterior can look washed out within a couple of years in Kerala. Here is why exterior paint fades so quickly, which colours and walls fade first, and how to keep your house colour strong for longer.
Short answer: Exterior paint fades quickly in Kerala because strong year-round sunshine (UV) breaks down the pigments and binder, while heavy monsoon rain, humidity and salt air wash and weaken the film. Bright reds, oranges and yellows, south and west-facing walls, and low-quality or over-thinned paint fade fastest. To slow fading, prepare and prime the wall properly, choose a UV-resistant exterior emulsion, apply two full coats, and pick lighter or earthier shades for walls in full sun.
Why does exterior paint fade so quickly in Kerala?
Kerala’s climate attacks exterior paint from every direction at once. These are the main causes:
- Strong UV light. Close to the equator, the sun is intense for most of the year. UV rays break down the colour pigments and the binder that holds them, so the colour slowly bleaches.
- Heavy monsoon rain. Months of driving rain wash the surface and carry away any weakened film. Walls that stay wet for long periods also lose colour faster.
- Heat and humidity cycles. Hot days, humid nights and sudden showers make the paint film expand and contract, which opens it up to more damage.
- Salt air near the coast. Salt settles on walls, draws in moisture and attacks the film. See our coastal exterior paint guide.
- Alkali from new plaster. Fresh cement plaster is strongly alkaline. Painting it too soon, or without a primer, can burn out colours and leave patchy fading.
- Low-quality or over-thinned paint. Less binder means less protection for the pigment, so the colour gives up sooner.
- Interior paint or distemper used outside. These are not built for sun and rain and fade very quickly on exterior walls.
Which colours fade fastest?
| Colour type | Fade risk | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bright red, orange, pink | High | Many bright pigments are less stable under strong UV |
| Bright yellow, lime | High | Vivid shades show even small colour loss |
| Deep blue, purple, green | Medium to high | Dark shades absorb heat and show chalky bloom clearly |
| Earthy terracotta, ochre, brown | Lower | Earth-type pigments tend to hold colour well |
| Off-white, cream, beige, light grey | Lowest | Fading is hard to see on light, muted shades |
This does not mean you must avoid bright colours. Use them on smaller areas such as bands, pillars and the front elevation, and keep large sunny walls in lighter or earthier shades. Our guide to picking an exterior colour that lasts goes deeper.
Which walls fade first?
- South and west-facing walls. They take the strongest afternoon sun and usually fade first.
- Parapets and boundary walls. Fully exposed with no roof overhang to protect them.
- Walls hit by driving rain. Usually the side facing the south-west monsoon.
- Walls without sunshades. Window chajjas and roof overhangs protect the walls below them.
A simple check: compare the paint behind a sunshade or under the roof eaves with an open part of the same wall. The difference shows you how much colour the sun has taken.

- Let new plaster cure. Give fresh plaster time to cure and dry before painting, so its alkali does not attack the colour.
- Clean and repair. Wash off dirt, algae and chalky powder, and fix cracks and damp patches first.
- Use an exterior primer. A good primer seals the surface, resists alkali and salts, and gives the topcoat an even base.
- Choose a UV-resistant exterior emulsion. Look for paints built to shield against UV and keep colour from fading.
- Do not over-thin. Follow the dilution on the tin so the film keeps enough binder.
- Apply two full coats. One coat is too thin to protect the colour for long.
- Wash once a year. A gentle wash after the monsoon removes the dirt film that makes colours look faded.

|---|---|---|
| Colour lighter but film is firm, no powder | UV fading | Repaint with a UV-resistant exterior emulsion |
| White powder rubs off on your hand | Chalking | Clean, prime and repaint. See why paint becomes powdery |

Frequently asked questions
How long should exterior paint colour last in Kerala?
It depends on the paint, the colour and how exposed the wall is. A quality exterior emulsion on a well-prepared wall keeps its colour for several years, while cheaper paint on a sunny wall can fade within one or two.
Which exterior colour fades the least?
Light and muted colours such as off-white, cream, beige, light grey and earthy terracotta show the least visible fading.
Can faded exterior paint be restored?
Washing can bring back colour lost to dirt, but true UV fading cannot be reversed. The wall needs to be cleaned, primed where needed and repainted.
Does primer help stop paint fading?
Yes. A primer seals the wall and resists alkali and salts that can burn out colour, and it gives the topcoat an even base to perform on.
Why has only one side of my house faded?
That side usually gets the most direct sun or driving rain, most often the south or west-facing wall.
