How to Get Rid of Paint Smell: 8 Ways That Work (and 2 Myths)

PAINTING TIPS

Fresh walls look great, but the smell can linger for days. Here is why paint smells, how long it lasts, and eight practical ways to clear it faster, plus two popular tricks that do not really work.

Short answer: The fastest way to get rid of paint smell is to ventilate: open windows on opposite sides of the room, run a fan blowing air out of a window, and keep the airflow going for two to three days. Let each coat dry fully, close and remove open paint tins, and clean brushes outside. Activated charcoal and baking soda can absorb some lingering odour. Water-based emulsions usually smell much less than solvent-based products, and most of the smell fades within a few days.

Why does fresh paint smell?

As paint dries, the water and other volatile ingredients in it evaporate into the air. That evaporation is what you smell. Water-based emulsions, which are used for most interior walls, mostly release water and smell mild. Solvent-based products, such as some primers, enamels and thinners, release solvents and smell much stronger.

Solvent-based coatingsStrong, lasts longerSome metal primers, enamels, thinners

For more on the difference, see water-based vs oil-based paint.

How long does paint smell last?

  • Water-based wall paint: usually strongest on the first day and largely gone within two to three days with good ventilation.
  • Solvent-based coatings: can linger for a week or more, especially in closed spaces.
  • Humid weather and closed rooms make the smell last longer, because paint dries more slowly.

Room size and layout matter too. A small bedroom with one window takes longer to clear than a living room with doors on two sides. If a room has only one window, place a fan in the doorway blowing towards the window, so air is pulled through rather than circulating inside. Bathrooms and kitchens with exhaust fans clear fastest if you run the fan continuously for the first day.

What are 8 ways to get rid of paint smell?

  1. Cross-ventilate. Open windows and doors on opposite sides so air flows through.
  2. Use a fan to push air out. Place a fan in a window, facing outwards, to pull fumes out of the room.
  3. Keep the airflow going for two to three days, not just while painting.
  4. Let each coat dry fully before closing the room.
  5. Close and remove open tins. An open tin or a tray of leftover paint keeps releasing smell.
  6. Clean brushes and rollers outside, not in the bathroom.
  7. Use activated charcoal or baking soda. Bowls placed around the room can absorb some lingering odour.
  8. Run the air-conditioner on fresh-air mode if it has one, or keep the room aired before switching to recirculation.

Do onions and lemons remove paint smell?

MythThe truth
A cut onion in a bowl absorbs paint smellIt mostly adds its own smell. Ventilation works far better.
Lemon water or vinegar removes the smellThey mask it with another smell for a while. Fresh air is what clears it.

There is nothing wrong with a pleasant room freshener afterwards, but the only thing that actually removes the smell is moving the vapour out of the room.

How do you choose paint that smells less?

  • Choose water-based emulsions for interior walls and ceilings.
  • Use solvent-based products only where needed, such as on metal, and apply them in well-ventilated spaces.
  • Plan the timing. Paint bedrooms and kids’ rooms when you can sleep elsewhere for a night or two. See kids’ room painting tips.
  • Paint in dry weather, when paint dries faster and the smell clears sooner.
