The best off-white is the one whose undertone suits your light. Here are 12 Turbolux off-whites, sorted by undertone, with the LRV and the room each one suits best.
Short answer: The best off-white paint colours for Indian homes sit between LRV 80 and 91, bright enough to bounce daylight around the room but soft enough not to glare the way pure white does. Choose by undertone: warm off-whites like Kanchenjunga Frost and Khadi Dawn suit living rooms, bedrooms and north-facing rooms; balanced off-whites like Chadar Frost suit almost any room; cool off-whites like Nimbus Frost suit sunny south and west-facing rooms. Always test a large sample on the actual wall before buying.
Every shade below is from the Turbolux 1,260-shade range, with its code, hex value and LRV so you can compare them properly.
What is the difference between white and off-white?
A pure white reflects almost all light and has no visible tint. Our brightest whites, such as Gangotri Chalk, have an LRV of 96. An off-white is a white with a small amount of colour added, usually a touch of yellow, red, grey or green. That tint is called the undertone.
LRV (Light Reflectance Value) is the percentage of light a colour reflects, on a scale from 0 (black) to 100 (pure white). Off-whites usually fall between 80 and 91. That small drop from pure white is exactly why they feel calmer: in strong Indian daylight, a 96 LRV wall can glare, while an 85 LRV off-white still brightens the room without hurting the eyes.
How do you choose the right undertone?
Undertone matters more than the name on the card. The same off-white can look creamy in one room and grey in another, depending on the light.
- Warm off-whites (a hint of yellow or pink) feel cosy and welcoming. They balance cool, indirect light in north-facing rooms and look good with wood, brass and warm LED bulbs.
- Balanced off-whites (very little visible tint) are the safest choice. They work in almost any light and with any furniture.
- Cool off-whites (a hint of blue or grey) feel fresh and crisp. They calm down the hot, yellow afternoon light in south and west-facing rooms.
- Green-leaning off-whites feel airy and natural, and pair well with plants, cane and teak.
A simple rule: pick the opposite of your light. Cool light, warm off-white. Warm light, cool or balanced off-white.

Balanced off-whites: the safe choice
Chadar Frost is the one to pick if you want a single colour for the whole house. At LRV 91 it is nearly as bright as white, with just enough softness to take the glare away. Sonbhadra Dawn adds the faintest warmth, which keeps a large living room from feeling clinical. Gangotri Frost is a little deeper at LRV 88, and hides everyday marks better in kitchens and study rooms.
Warm off-whites: cosy and welcoming
Kanchenjunga Frost is the classic warm off-white, and our top pick for north-facing living rooms. Cauvery Dawn carries a gentle blush that looks lovely in bedrooms under warm lighting. Khadi Dawn and Kanchenjunga Linen are deeper, creamier options at LRV 81 to 83 that sit beautifully next to teak, rosewood and brass. Zanskar Shell is the deepest in this list; it reads almost like a pale putty, and works as a soft feature wall or an exterior body colour.

Nimbus Frost has a quiet blue-grey undertone that cools down rooms that get harsh afternoon sun. Kohra Linen is a greyer, more modern off-white that suits home offices and minimal interiors with black or steel fittings.
Green-leaning off-whites: airy and natural
Marari Frost is bright and clean with a whisper of green, a lovely choice for bathrooms and children’s rooms. Kappad Linen is a touch deeper and pairs naturally with indoor plants, cane furniture and open verandahs.

- Kitchen: Gangotri Frost. Slightly deeper whites hide splashes and smoke marks better than pure white.
- Bathroom: Marari Frost for a clean, spa-like feel.
- Home office: Kohra Linen or Nimbus Frost for a focused, neutral backdrop.

Matt ceilingView Ultra Ceiling White →Can you use off-white on exterior walls?
Yes, and in a hot climate it is a smart choice. A high-LRV exterior reflects more sunlight, so the walls absorb less heat than a dark colour would. The trade-off is that pale walls show dust, rain streaks and algae sooner. Two things help: choose a slightly deeper off-white such as Zanskar Shell or Kanchenjunga Linen rather than a stark white, and use an exterior emulsion that resists dirt pick-up. Our guide to picking an exterior colour that lasts covers the rest.

An ultra-premium weatherproof exterior emulsion with Lotus Effect Technology. Water beads off and dirt does not settle, so pale exteriors stay cleaner for longer.

- Shortlist two or three shades with different undertones, not five that look almost the same.
- Paint a large sample, at least 60 cm by 60 cm, directly on the wall you plan to paint. Small chips are misleading.
- Put it next to something pure white, like a sheet of printer paper. The undertone becomes obvious straight away.
- Look at it three times a day: morning, afternoon and after dark under your own lights.
- Check it beside your floor, curtains and furniture, because they will change how the undertone reads.
Frequently asked questions
Is off-white better than pure white for Indian homes?
For most rooms, yes. Strong daylight makes pure white glare, and it shows every mark. Off-whites between LRV 80 and 91 stay bright but feel softer and are more forgiving to live with.
Which off-white makes a room look bigger?
A high-LRV, balanced off-white such as Chadar Frost (LRV 91) reflects the most light while still feeling soft, which makes walls recede and rooms feel larger.
Is off-white the same as cream?
No. Cream is a deeper, clearly yellow shade. Off-white is much closer to white, with only a hint of undertone. Warm off-whites like Kanchenjunga Linen sit between the two.
What colour goes with off-white walls?
Almost anything. Warm off-whites pair well with wood, terracotta and brass; cool off-whites pair well with navy, grey, black and steel; green-leaning off-whites pair well with plants, cane and natural fibres.
Do off-white walls get dirty quickly?
Pale walls show marks sooner than mid-tones, but a slightly deeper off-white and a washable emulsion make a big difference. Most everyday marks wipe off a good emulsion with a damp cloth.
