When Is the Best Time to Paint a House in Kerala? A Month-by-Month Guide

PAINTING GUIDE

December to March is Kerala’s dry-season sweet spot for painting. Here’s the month-by-month breakdown, and what to avoid during the monsoon.

Short answer: The best time to paint a house in Kerala is December to March, once the northeast monsoon has ended, humidity is lower and the walls are driest. Late October and November can also work for interiors and for exteriors on dry days, but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Avoid exterior painting from June to September, and be careful in April and May as pre-monsoon showers begin.

If you’re planning a paint job around a wedding, housewarming or festival, timing decides more of the outcome than the brand you pick. Kerala’s two monsoons make some months genuinely risky for paint, and December to March is also the busiest season for painters, so booking early matters as much as picking the right window.

Why does timing matter so much in Kerala?

Kerala gets two monsoons: the southwest monsoon from June to September, and the northeast monsoon (thulavarsham) from October to December. Together they bring close to 3,000 mm of rain a year, and humidity often stays above 80 percent through both.

Paint needs two things to perform well: a dry wall, and dry air while it cures. When walls are damp, paint can’t bond properly, which leads to peeling, flaking, bubbling and patchy finishes. When rain hits exterior paint before it has cured, it can wash off or leave streaks. Picking the right season is the cheapest way to make a paint job last.

What is the best month to paint, month by month?

MonthsWeatherExterior paintingInterior painting
January to MarchDry, sunny, lowest humidity of the yearBestBest
April to MayVery hot, pre-monsoon showers from late AprilGood early, then risky. Avoid midday sunGood
June to SeptemberSouthwest monsoon, heavy continuous rainAvoidOnly if walls are dry and rooms ventilated
October to NovemberNortheast monsoon, afternoon thunderstormsPossible on dry mornings, with careGood
DecemberRain tapers off, cooler and drierVery goodVery good

The ideal window for a full house painting job in Kerala is mid-December to mid-March. Walls have had time to dry out after both monsoons, and you finish well before the pre-monsoon showers arrive.

Can you paint a house during the monsoon?

You can paint interiors during the monsoon if the walls are dry and there’s no active leak, but you shouldn’t paint exteriors while it’s raining regularly. The main risks:

  • Rain wash-off. Exterior emulsion usually needs several dry hours after application to resist rain. A sudden shower can streak or wash away fresh paint.
  • Trapped moisture. Damp plaster pushes moisture out through the new paint, causing blisters and peeling within weeks.
  • Slow drying. High humidity slows curing, so coats stay soft, pick up dust, and recoat times stretch out.
  • Algae and fungus. Paint applied on a damp wall is more likely to develop green or black patches.

If you must work during the rainy season, use it for prep instead: fix leaks, repair cracks and finalise colours, then paint once the weather turns.

Should you paint the interior and exterior at different times?

Yes, splitting the job can save time and money. Interiors are protected from rain, so they can be painted in October and November while exterior walls finish drying out. The exterior can then follow in December to February. This also spreads out spending and makes it easier to book a good painter during peak season.

One rule applies either way: fix exterior water seepage first. Interior paint on a wall that’s letting in rain will fail no matter how well it’s applied. Our guide on stopping wall dampness and seepage explains what to check.

How do you know your walls are dry enough to paint?

  1. Wait after the rain. Give exterior walls at least 2 to 3 dry, sunny days after heavy rain, longer after a long wet spell.
  2. Use the plastic sheet test. Tape a 30 cm square of clear plastic to the wall for 24 hours. Droplets underneath mean the wall is still damp.
  3. Ask for a moisture meter reading. Many painters and dealers carry one, and a low reading gives you confidence before priming.
  4. Check new plaster age. New cement plaster needs at least 28 days to cure, and more in humid weather. See our guide on preparing new plaster for painting.
  5. Look for signs. Dark patches, a musty smell, white powdery salts or soft plaster all mean the wall needs more time or a damp treatment first.

How should you plan a paint job for the coming season?

With the southwest monsoon over, now is the right time to plan a dry-season paint job:

  • October: Inspect walls for rain damage. Note cracks, damp patches and algae growth. Our repainting guide helps you decide whether it’s time for a full repaint.
  • November: Get quotes, fix leaks and choose colours. Paint interiors if you want to be ready for a family function.
  • December to March: Paint the exterior. Start early in the day, avoid walls in strong direct sun, and stop by mid-afternoon if clouds build.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best season to paint a house in Kerala?

The dry season from December to March is best. Humidity is lowest, rain is rare, and walls have dried out after both monsoons.

Is it OK to paint the exterior of a house in October?

It’s possible on dry days, but the northeast monsoon brings frequent afternoon showers in October and November. Paint early in the morning and check the forecast, or wait until December for the safest results.

How long after rain can I paint exterior walls?

Wait at least 2 to 3 dry, sunny days after heavy rain, and check that the wall surface is fully dry before priming.

Can I paint interior walls during the monsoon?

Yes, if the walls are dry, there’s no leak, and the rooms are well ventilated. Drying takes longer, so allow extra time between coats.

Is summer a good time to paint in Kerala?

March and early April are good. By May, heat and pre-monsoon showers make exterior painting harder. Avoid painting walls in strong midday sun, as the paint can dry too fast and bubble.
