A sudden shower is the biggest worry on any exterior paint job, especially during the northeast monsoon. Here is how long paint needs before it can take rain, what rain does to fresh paint, and how to fix it if the weather catches you out.
Short answer: Most water-based exterior emulsions need at least a few hours of dry weather after application before rain, and several more hours to resist heavy rain. For example, Extra Life is surface dry in 3 to 4 hours and hard dry in 8 to 10 hours. High-gloss Mirror Black and Mirror Grey are surface dry in 20 to 30 minutes and hard dry in 6 to 8 hours. As a rule, plan for at least 4 to 6 dry hours after each coat, more in cool or humid weather, and avoid painting if rain is forecast that afternoon.
How long does exterior paint need before rain?
| Product | Surface dry | Recoat | Hard dry | Full cure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extra Life (exterior semi-gloss) | 3 to 4 hours | 4 to 6 hours | 8 to 10 hours | 7 days |
| Mirror Black and Mirror Grey (high gloss) | 20 to 30 minutes | 4 to 6 hours | 6 to 8 hours | 7 days |
| Prestige epoxy primer (steel) | About 4 minutes | At least 6 hours | 24 hours | |
| Pride epoxy primer (metal) | 6 to 7 hours (touch dry) | 6 to 8 hours | 2 days |
These are for normal ambient conditions, as listed on the Turbolux product pages. In cool, humid or shaded conditions, paint takes longer. Surface dry means the top has set; the film is still soft underneath.
Shaded walls, walls facing the sea breeze and walls in valleys dry more slowly than open, sunny ones. On these, add a few extra hours before expecting the paint to resist rain. Thick coats also dry slowly, which is another reason to apply two thin coats rather than one heavy one. If your painter wants to finish quickly, ask them to plan the work so that the walls most exposed to rain are painted on the driest days.
What happens if it rains on fresh paint?
| Timing | Likely result |
|---|---|
| Rain within the first hour or so | Paint can wash off, run or streak |
| Rain before surface dry | Spots, streaks, dull patches |
| Rain after surface dry, before hard dry | Usually minor marks or a patchy sheen |
| Rain after hard dry | Usually fine |
Light drizzle on a surface-dry coat often leaves only small spots. Heavy rain on wet paint can wash it down the wall and onto the floor.
How do you plan painting around rain?
- Check the hourly forecast before every coat.
- Paint in the morning, once dew has dried, so the paint gets the warm, dry midday hours.
- Stop early on days when afternoon thunderstorms are likely.
- Paint sheltered walls first on uncertain days, such as walls under the eaves or sit-out.
- Keep coats thin and even. Thick coats dry slower.
- Cover fresh work with polythene sheets if a shower is coming, without letting the sheet touch the paint.

- Let the wall dry completely. Do not touch the damaged area while wet.
- Check the damage in daylight once dry.
- For light spots, lightly brush or sand the surface and apply another coat.
- For washed-out or streaked areas, clean off loose paint, let dry and repaint the whole wall section for an even finish.
- Clean any paint run-off from floors and plants with water as soon as possible.
What about metal and epoxy primers?
Epoxy primers on gates, grilles and steel need a dry surface and dry air. Prestige is surface dry in about 4 minutes, which helps in uncertain weather, but it still needs time to cure before heavy rain or service. Never prime damp or condensation-covered steel. See painting steel in humid weather and epoxy primer drying times.

How long does exterior paint need to dry before rain?
Plan for at least 4 to 6 dry hours after each coat, and longer in cool or humid weather. For example, Extra Life is surface dry in 3 to 4 hours and hard dry in 8 to 10 hours.
What happens if it rains right after painting?
Rain on wet paint can wash it off or leave streaks and spots. Once the paint is hard dry, rain usually causes no damage.
Can I paint if rain is forecast later in the day?
Only if there will be enough dry hours after each coat. If rain is expected within a few hours, wait for a drier day.
How do I fix paint damaged by rain?
Let it dry fully, sand or brush light spots and recoat. For streaked or washed-out areas, repaint the whole wall section.
Does humidity slow paint drying?
Yes. High humidity slows evaporation, so paint stays soft longer. See our guide to painting in high humidity.
