Sit-Out and Verandah Floor Painting Before Diwali: A Step-by-Step Guide

DIWALI HOME GUIDE

The sit-out and verandah are where Diwali happens: rangoli at the door, diyas along the edge and guests arriving. A worn, stained floor spoils the picture. Here is how to repaint it properly before the festival.

Short answer: To paint a sit-out or verandah floor before Diwali, use a dedicated floor coat, not wall paint. Clean the floor thoroughly, remove oil and loose paint, repair cracks, and let the surface dry completely. Apply the floor coat in thin, even coats and keep people off it until it has dried fully. Finish at least a few days before Diwali so the floor is ready for rangoli and diyas. Everguard Floor & Roof Coat is built for floors, driveways and terraces, with a glossy finish that needs no clear coat.

Why does a sit-out floor need floor paint?

Wall paint is not designed for feet, chairs, footwear and two-wheelers. On a floor it scuffs, peels and wears through quickly. A floor coat is formulated to take traffic, sun and water.

What do you need to paint a sit-out floor?

  • Floor coat (ask your dealer to confirm the quantity for your floor area)
  • Stiff brush, scraper and wire brush
  • Mild detergent and a degreaser for oil spots
  • Crack filler for cement floors
  • Roller with an extension pole, and a brush for edges
  • Masking tape for the wall line and steps
  • Polythene sheet to protect walls, doors and nearby furniture

Before you buy, check the floor surface with your dealer. Cement and concrete floors are the most common in sit-outs, and a sound, clean, dry surface is the key to a coat that lasts. If your sit-out floor has old paint, test a small area first to make sure the new coat bonds well.

How do you paint a sit-out floor step by step?

  1. Clear the area. Move furniture, pots and footwear racks.
  2. Clean thoroughly. Scrub with detergent, treat oil spots with a degreaser, and rinse well.
  3. Remove loose paint. Scrape and wire brush any peeling areas back to a firm surface.
  4. Repair cracks and holes with a suitable filler and let it set.
  5. Let the floor dry completely. Paint never bonds to a damp floor. Allow at least a full dry day, more after rain.
  6. Mask the edges. Tape the wall line and the edges of steps.
  7. Cut in the edges with a brush, then roll the main area in thin, even coats, working back towards the exit.
  8. Apply the second coat after the first has dried, as advised by your dealer.
  9. Keep traffic off until the coat has dried fully. Rope off the area if needed.

How soon can you use the floor for rangoli and diyas?

  • Finish early. Plan to complete the floor at least a few days before Diwali so the coat has time to harden.
  • Rangoli: dry rangoli powder brushes off a glossy floor easily. Avoid wet colours or kumkum that can stain until the floor is fully dry.
  • Diyas: place oil lamps on a small plate or tray rather than directly on the floor to avoid oil marks and heat spots.
  • Crackers: never burst crackers on a painted sit-out. Use the open yard or road, well away from the house.
  • Cleaning afterwards: sweep first, then mop with mild detergent. See our post-Diwali cleaning guide for walls.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use wall paint on my sit-out floor?

It is not recommended. Wall paint scuffs and peels under foot traffic. Use a dedicated floor coat such as Everguard.

How long before Diwali should I paint the sit-out floor?

Finish at least a few days before Diwali so the coat can dry and harden before rangoli, diyas and guests.

Does Everguard need a clear coat?

No. Everguard is a glossy floor and roof coat that is durable in its own gloss, so no clear coat is needed over it.

Can I put rangoli on a painted floor?

Yes, once the floor has fully dried. Dry rangoli powder brushes off a glossy floor easily.

Why is my floor paint peeling?

Usually because it was applied over a damp, oily or dusty floor, or because wall paint was used instead of a floor coat.
