The South India Festival Home-Painting Calendar: When to Repaint for Onam, Vishu, Diwali & Christmas

FESTIVAL GUIDE

South India repaints homes around four festivals, not one. Here’s when to start for each, wherever you are in Kerala, Tamil Nadu or Karnataka.

Short answer: South India’s four big home-painting occasions are Onam (August/September, Kerala), Vishu (mid-April, Kerala), Diwali (October/November, all three states) and Christmas (25 December, especially Kerala). Each has its own ideal start window, driven by how close it sits to the monsoon. This guide maps all four so you can plan around whichever one applies to your household.

Onam: Kerala’s original repainting season

Onam is the festival most closely tied to home repainting in Kerala, tradition holds a home should look its best for Mahabali’s yearly visit. Thiruvonam usually falls in late August or early September, right after Kerala’s main monsoon has broken but while humidity is still high. That narrow window is exactly why an early start matters, begin 4 to 5 weeks out so there’s slack if walls need extra drying time.

Vishu: a fresh coat for Kerala’s new year

Vishu falls in mid-April and marks the Malayalam new year, the same week Tamil Nadu celebrates Puthandu and Karnataka celebrates Ugadi. The Vishukkani tradition, the first sight one sees on Vishu morning, has made a fresh, well-kept home part of the occasion for many households. April is also dry and hot across the region, arguably the easiest weather of the year to paint in, so a 3 to 4 week window is comfortable rather than tight.

Diwali: the pan-South-India festival push

Diwali is the one festival here that pulls demand across all three states. It also lands earlier than Onam’s window suggests, right at the tail of the monsoon in coastal areas, which is why the 25 to 30 day start window matters more here than anywhere else on this calendar. Our full Diwali painting timeline breaks this down day by day.

Christmas: the quiet fourth festival

Christmas doesn’t get the same painting-blog attention as Diwali, but in Kerala especially, where Christian communities are a significant share of the population, and in pockets of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, it follows the same pattern, homes get freshened up, star lanterns go up, and families host through the season. Because Christmas sits so close after Diwali, homeowners in both traditions often find it easier to combine the two into one November repaint rather than two separate jobs six weeks apart.

Which festival should you actually plan around?

If more than one of these applies to your household, work backward from whichever comes first in the calendar year and treat the others as touch-ups rather than full repaints. A well-prepared exterior from a Diwali repaint, for instance, usually only needs a light clean and any scuffed-area touch-up to look fresh again for Christmas three to four weeks later, not a full second job.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best festival to plan a home repaint around in South India?

Diwali and Onam draw the most repainting activity because both follow soon after the monsoon, when homes need it most. Which to prioritise depends on where you live and which festival your household celebrates.

Do Vishu, Puthandu and Ugadi fall on the same day?

Yes, all three, Kerala’s Vishu, Tamil Nadu’s Puthandu and Karnataka’s Ugadi, generally fall in the same mid-April week, marking the solar new year across South India.

Is it better to paint before Onam or before Vishu?

Vishu (April) is easier weather-wise since it’s dry and hot with no monsoon risk. Onam (August/September) has a tighter window because it follows straight after the rains.

Can one repaint cover both Diwali and Christmas?

Usually yes. A well-prepared Diwali repaint typically only needs a light clean and small touch-ups to still look fresh for Christmas three to four weeks later.

How far in advance should I plan a festival repaint?

Start planning, including booking a painter or dealer consultation, at least a month before your target festival, even if the actual painting takes less time.
