Gandhi Jayanti falls on a Friday this year. A practical guide to cleaning walls, fixing marks and doing a weekend touch-up, without repainting the whole house.
Short answer: To clean a painted wall without damaging it, dust it first with a dry cloth, then wipe with a well-wrung damp cloth and plain water, adding a drop of mild dish soap only for greasy areas, and dry it afterwards. Avoid hard scrubbing, scouring pads and strong cleaners, which leave shiny patches. Marks that will not wipe off, such as crayon, ink and deep scuffs, need a small touch-up in the original shade and finish, not more scrubbing.
Gandhi Jayanti falls on Friday, 2 October 2026, which makes it a three-day weekend. It is the day most cleanliness drives happen across the country, and most of them focus on streets and public spaces.
Homes deserve a turn too. Not a full repaint, which is a project with dust sheets and a week of disruption. Just the ordinary maintenance most walls never get: the switchboard smudges, the scuff behind the dining chairs, the patch near the kitchen door. Here is what you can realistically do in a weekend.
How do you clean a painted wall without damaging it?
Start with a dry cloth, then a barely damp one, and only then anything stronger. Most household marks are dust held in place by a little grease, and dry dusting takes off more of it than people expect.
- Dust first, top to bottom. Use a soft dry cloth or a microfibre mop. Skipping this turns dust into mud the moment you add water.
- Wipe with a well-wrung damp cloth and plain water. The cloth should be damp, never wet. Water running down a wall leaves streaks that are harder to fix than the original mark.
- For greasy kitchen walls, add a drop of mild dish soap. Wipe, then go over the area once with plain water so no residue is left behind.
- Dry the area with a clean cloth. This stops water marks forming as it dries.
What to avoid: scrubbing hard in one spot, scouring pads and strong cleaners. All three polish the paint in that patch, so you end up with a shiny mark where the dirty mark used to be. Test anything new on a hidden corner first, behind a door or under a shelf.
Different paints handle washing differently, so check what is on your walls before you start on a large area.
What about marks that do not come off?
Some do not, and that is what touch-up paint is for. Crayon, ink, sticker residue and deep scuffs usually need a small patch of fresh paint rather than more scrubbing.
| Mark | Try first | If it stays |
|---|---|---|
| Switchboard smudges | Damp cloth, drop of mild soap | Touch up the patch |
| Kitchen grease | Mild soap, then plain water rinse | Touch up after the grease is fully removed |
| Scuffs from chairs and shoes | Dry cloth, then damp cloth | Touch up, feathering the edges |
| Crayon, ink, sticker residue | Gentle damp wipe only | Touch up rather than scrub |
| Dark patches that return | Do not clean or paint yet | Find the damp source first |
For a touch-up that does not show:
- Use paint from the original tin if you still have it, or take a photo of the shade code to your dealer. A shade mixed a year apart can be very slightly different.
- Feather the edges. Work from the centre of the patch outward with a light hand, so there is no hard line where new meets old.
- Match the finish, not just the colour. A matt patch on a sheen wall shows under side light even when the colour is perfect.
- Do the whole wall rather than a patch if the wall is old and faded. Sometimes it is less work.

If you have the Friday free, this is a realistic order of work.
| When | Job | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| Friday morning | Dust all walls, ceiling corners and fans | Makes everything else look better, and must come before any water |
| Friday afternoon | Wash high-traffic areas: kitchen, around switches, hallway, doors and frames | Walls have the evening to dry fully |
| Saturday | Touch up the marks that survived; note anything that needs a proper repaint | Paint goes on clean, dry walls |
| Sunday | The outside: sweep the entrance, wash the gate and front door, clear the drains | Ready before the next rain |
That last one is in the spirit of the day. The street outside your gate counts too.
When is cleaning not the answer?
Some marks are a message. Dark patches that keep coming back, paint that bubbles or flakes, or a chalky powder on your hand after touching the wall are damp or surface problems, not dirt. Washing them achieves nothing, and painting over them lasts a few months at best.
- Black or green spots in corners usually mean mould fed by damp. See black spots and mould indoors.
- Bubbling and flaking point to moisture behind the paint. See why paint peels and flakes.
- Chalky powder means the paint film is at the end of its life. See how often to repaint.
If you are seeing any of these after this monsoon, that is a job to plan properly rather than squeeze into a weekend.
Which Turbolux emulsions should you use?
For indoor touch-ups, take your shade code to the dealer and ask for Dew tinted to match, in the same finish as the wall. If the weekend shows that the front of the house needs more than a wash, Majestic keeps road-facing walls cleaner for longer, and Alpha Advanced is the affordable choice for compound walls. All three come in the full range on our colours page.
Many dealers are closed on 2 October for the holiday, so plan your shade visit for Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
When is Gandhi Jayanti 2026?
Friday, 2 October 2026. It is a gazetted national holiday, so this year it makes a three-day weekend.
How do you clean painted walls at home?
Dust first, then wipe with a well-wrung damp cloth. Add a drop of mild dish soap for greasy areas and dry the surface afterwards. Avoid scrubbing and harsh cleaners.
How do you touch up paint so it does not show?
Use the original shade and finish, and feather the edges outward from the centre of the patch instead of painting a hard-edged square.
Why do marks keep coming back on the same wall?
That usually means damp behind the wall, not dirt. Cleaning and repainting will not hold until the source of the water is fixed.
Can you use a magic eraser or scouring pad on painted walls?
It is best not to. Abrasive pads polish the paint and leave a shiny patch. Try a damp cloth first, and touch up marks that do not come off.
