FESTIVAL COLOUR GUIDE

Festivals are when homes fill with lamps, flowers and guests. A rich feature wall in red, gold, green or plum can set the scene for Diwali and Christmas, and still look elegant all year. Here are 12 Turbolux shades and how to use them.

Short answer: The best festive wall colours are rich, warm shades used on one feature wall: festive reds such as Puri Mid and Gulmohar Deep, deep maroon such as Bandhani Night, marigold and copper such as Hampi Deep and Konark Night, golds such as Kanchipuram Mid, and jewel tones such as Ritu Night green and Bijapur Deep purple. Keep the other walls light so the room stays bright, and pair the feature wall with white, cream or wood. These shades glow under festival lights and still look smart once the decorations come down.

Why use a festive feature wall?

  • One wall, big impact. A single rich wall changes the mood of a room without the cost and time of repainting everything.
  • It glows under festival lights. Warm reds, golds and jewel tones look richest under diyas, fairy lights and star lanterns.
  • It frames the celebration. A deep wall behind the lamp display, the Christmas tree or the dining table makes it the focal point for photos.
  • It lasts beyond the season. Choose a shade you love, and it becomes a year-round feature.

Deep colours (LRV below 30) absorb more light, so use them on one wall in a well-lit room. Ask your dealer for a sample and test it under your festival lighting.

What goes with a rich festive wall?

  • White or ivory side walls keep the room bright and make the feature wall stand out. See our off-white guide.
  • Cream is a softer partner for reds, golds and copper. See cream wall paint.
  • Teak and rosewood furniture deepens reds and golds beautifully.
  • Brass and gold accents pick up the warmth of lamps and festive shades.
  • Greenery such as plants, mango leaves and garlands balances deep reds and plums.

How do you paint a deep colour so it looks even?

  1. Prepare the wall. Fill holes and cracks, and sand smooth, since deep colours show every flaw.
  2. Prime first. A primer seals repairs so the colour dries to one even tone instead of patches.
  3. Apply two full coats, or a third if the shade still looks uneven. Deep shades usually need more coats than pale ones.
  4. Paint the whole wall in one go. Work corner to corner and keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  5. Mask the edges. Tape the ceiling line and adjoining walls for a crisp finish.
  6. Allow time before decorating. Let the paint dry fully before hanging lights or sticking decorations on the wall.

Frequently asked questions

Which colour is good for Diwali home decoration?

Warm reds, marigold orange, copper and gold work beautifully for Diwali, especially on one feature wall behind your lamp display.

What wall colours suit Christmas?

Classic festive red and deep green, such as Gulmohar Deep and Ritu Night, look striking behind a Christmas tree, with white or cream on the other walls.

Will a red feature wall make my room look smaller?

A deep wall can make a room feel cosier. Keep it to one wall in a well-lit room and keep the other walls and ceiling light.

How many coats does a deep red wall need?

Usually two full coats over a primer, and sometimes a third for very deep shades, to get an even, rich colour.

Can I keep a festive colour after the festival?

Yes. Rich shades such as antique gold, copper and emerald teal look elegant all year, especially with wood and brass.
