On a new factory, warehouse or plant, the primer is specified once and has to protect the steel and concrete for years. This guide is for contractors, engineers and project owners specifying Prestige Epoxy Primer.
Short answer: On industrial projects, specify Prestige Epoxy Primer for structural steel, pre-engineered building frames, mezzanines, staircases, pipe racks, tank stands and concrete floors and plinths. It is a 1-pack, Direct to Metal epoxy primer for steel, iron and concrete, rated for interior and exterior use, surface dry in about 4 minutes and fully cured in 24 hours. Write the specification around surface preparation, two to three coats at least 6 hours apart, a stripe coat on edges and welds, dry-surface conditions and touch-up after erection. That keeps the project on programme and gives the owner steel that is protected from day one.
Why does the primer matter so much on industrial projects?
- It is hard to redo. Once roof sheets, cladding, services and racking are in place, reaching the steel again is slow and costly.
- It protects the steel from day one. Members often sit in the yard or on site for weeks before the building is closed in, through monsoon rain and humidity.
- It decides the topcoat’s life. Everything above the primer depends on how well it is anchored to the steel.
- It affects the programme. Slow-drying primers hold up fabrication, delivery and erection.
Where should Prestige be specified on a project?
| Project element | Surface | Primer coats |
|---|---|---|
| Main frames, columns and rafters | Structural steel | 2 to 3 |
| Purlins, bracing and girts | Steel | 2 to 3 |
| Mezzanines, platforms and staircases | Steel | 3 (wear and impact) |
| Pipe racks and tank stands | Steel | 3 |
| Industrial floors, plinths and bunds | Concrete | 2 to 3 |
| Coastal or chemical sites, any element | Steel or concrete | 3 |
| Secondary steel: railings, frames, gates | Steel | Prestige, or Pride for budget-sensitive items |

Grey & Black · 500 ml to 20 LView Prestige →What should the primer specification say?
A clear specification avoids arguments on site. Cover these points:
- Product: Turbolux Prestige Epoxy Primer (1K epoxy, DM Technology), grey or black.
- Surface preparation, steel: remove oil and grease first, then rust, mill scale and loose coatings by abrasive blasting or power tool cleaning. Surfaces clean, dry and sound.
- Surface preparation, concrete: fully cured and dry, laitance and contaminants removed, cracks and voids filled with a compatible epoxy filler.
- Application: brush or roller, or spray at about 5% dilution with the recommended thinner. Thinned material used within 24 hours.
- Coats: two to three full coats, minimum 6 hours apart, plus a brushed stripe coat on edges, welds, bolts and corners before each full coat.
- Conditions: no application on damp surfaces or during rain; surfaces kept dry and protected until cured.
- Cure: 24 hours to full cure at normal ambient conditions before service or topcoat, longer in cold or humid conditions.
- Touch-up: all transport damage, site welds and bolted connections cleaned and primed after erection.
- Storage: sealed containers at 5 to 35°C, away from sunlight, moisture and heat; shelf life 12 to 24 months.
How do you fit priming into the project programme?
| Stage | Primer task | Why it helps the programme |
|---|---|---|
| Fabrication | Shop-prime all members after welding | 4-minute surface dry lets members be turned and moved quickly |
| Storage and delivery | Stack on bearers, cover in rain | Hard film resists handling and transport damage |
| Erection | Touch up bolts, site welds and scrapes | Small packs (500 ml, 1 L) keep touch-up on site |
| Floors and plinths | Prime concrete after curing and drying | Full cure in 24 hours keeps floor areas closed for less time |
| Before handover | Inspect, final touch-up, record | Owner receives fully protected steel |
Order bulk work in 20 L packs and keep 4 L, 1 L and 500 ml packs for site teams and touch-up. Ask your Turbolux dealer to confirm quantities from your steel and floor areas. Rainy-season projects should follow our guide to painting steel in the monsoon.
What should be checked before handover?
- Coverage: no bare spots, thin edges or missed areas behind connections and under members.
- Number of coats: alternating grey and black coats make it easy to confirm every area received its full build.
- Touch-up: every bolted connection, site weld and transport scratch primed.
- Adhesion: no lifting, blistering or peeling, which would point to poor preparation or damp surfaces.
- Floors: no bubbles, soft areas or bare patches after cure.
- Records: note product, colours, dates and areas, so future maintenance uses a compatible system.

What surfaces can Prestige Epoxy Primer be used on?
Steel, iron and other ferrous metals, and concrete, for interior and exterior use. Typical project uses are structural steel, pre-engineered building frames, tank stands, pipe racks and industrial floors.
How many coats of Prestige should be specified?
Two to three full coats, at least 6 hours apart, with a stripe coat on edges and welds. Specify three coats for coastal, chemical and high-wear areas.
Should steel be primed in the shop or on site?
Shop priming is best, because conditions are controlled and every face is reachable. On site, touch up bolts, site welds and any transport damage after erection.
How long does Prestige take to cure?
Surface dry in about 4 minutes, recoat after 6 hours minimum, and full cure in 24 hours at normal ambient conditions.
Does Prestige come with a warranty?
No. Prestige is supplied without a warranty term. Its performance depends on correct surface preparation, film build and application conditions.
