Grey is the most versatile wall colour there is, and the easiest to get wrong. The secret is the undertone. Here are 12 Turbolux greys, from soft pale to deep charcoal, and how to choose.
Short answer: To choose the right grey wall paint, decide on the depth first, then the undertone. Pale greys (LRV 79 to 88) such as Chhaya Dawn and Lahaul Dawn keep a room bright; mid greys (LRV 55 to 61) such as Chhaya Light add calm without darkening; deep greys and charcoals such as Alibaug Mid and Alibaug Night suit feature walls. Then match the undertone to your light: warm greys (greige) like Godavari Light for north-facing or cool-lit rooms, and cool blue-greys like Dhanushkodi Light for bright, sunny rooms. Always test a large sample on the real wall.
Why do grey walls look so different from the shade card?
Grey is made by mixing black and white, plus a small amount of another colour. That small amount, the undertone, is invisible on a tiny chip but obvious on a whole wall. A grey that looked neutral in the shop can turn blue, green or even purple at home, depending on the light.
The second factor is LRV (Light Reflectance Value), which tells you how much light a colour reflects on a scale of 0 to 100. A grey with a high LRV keeps a room bright; a low LRV grey absorbs light and makes a room feel smaller and cosier.
What are grey undertones?
- Neutral greys have almost no visible tint. They are the safest, most flexible choice.
- Cool greys lean blue. They look crisp and modern, and calm down hot, sunny rooms.
- Warm greys, often called greige, lean beige or taupe. They feel cosy and suit wood, brass and warm lighting.
- Violet greys carry a faint purple tint. They look sophisticated in soft light but can feel cold in shade.
A simple test: hold the shade card next to a sheet of plain white paper. The undertone shows straight away.

Pale greys: bright and calm
Chhaya Dawn (LRV 88) is the closest grey to an off-white and an easy whole-house colour. Lahaul Dawn is a true neutral that works with any furniture. Alibaug Dawn is a little deeper and hides everyday marks better in kitchens and study rooms.
Soft mid greys: calm and grown-up
Chhaya Light and Alibaug Light are cool, restful greys that suit bedrooms and offices. Dhanushkodi Light has a clear blue lean that cools down hot, sunny rooms. Ushna Light carries a hint of violet for a softer, more elegant feel. If you want warmth, Godavari Light is a greige that sits beautifully next to teak and rosewood.

Lahaul Wash is a confident mid grey for feature walls. Alibaug Mid and Kanyakumari Deep are slate greys with a blue lean that look rich behind a TV unit or bookshelf. Alibaug Night is a near-charcoal for bold accent walls; use it on one wall, not all four, in smaller rooms.
Which grey suits which room?
- Living room: Lahaul Dawn for a light, flexible base, with Kanyakumari Deep on one feature wall.
- Bedroom: Chhaya Light or Ushna Light. Mid greys feel restful in the evening. See also bedroom colours that help you sleep.
- Kitchen: Alibaug Dawn, which hides splashes better than pure white.
- Home office: Alibaug Light or Dhanushkodi Light for a focused, neutral backdrop.
- North-facing rooms: a warm greige such as Godavari Light, so the room does not feel cold.
- Small rooms: stay pale, LRV 80 or above, and keep the ceiling white. Our guide to colours that make small rooms look bigger explains why.

For trims and ceilings with grey walls, a soft off-white keeps the look clean. Our off-white colour guide has options.
Can you use grey on exterior walls?
Yes. Grey exteriors look modern and hide dust better than white. Mid greys such as Lahaul Wash work well as a body colour, with an off-white for the upper floor or a charcoal like Alibaug Night for plinth bands and trims. Use a weatherproof exterior emulsion so the colour holds through sun and monsoon.

Ultra-premium weatherproof exterior emulsion with Lotus Effect Technology. Water beads off and dirt does not settle, so grey exteriors stay clean and even.

Which grey paint colour is best for a living room?
A pale neutral such as Lahaul Dawn (LRV 85) keeps the room bright and works with any furniture. Add depth with a darker grey like Kanyakumari Deep on one feature wall.
Why does my grey wall look blue?
The grey has a cool undertone, and cool daylight or white LED lighting brings it out. Choose a neutral or warm grey if you want to avoid the blue look.
Does grey make a room look smaller?
Only darker greys. Pale greys with an LRV of 80 or more reflect plenty of light and keep rooms feeling open.
What is greige?
Greige is a blend of grey and beige: a warm grey. It suits rooms with cool light and pairs well with wood and brass. Godavari Light is a good example.
Is grey a good exterior house colour?
Yes. Mid greys hide dust better than white and look modern. Pair them with off-white upper floors or charcoal plinth bands, and use a weatherproof exterior emulsion.
